Terms of Use.
In force since September 2026
These terms govern your use of this website. They also carry the information a Portuguese law firm is required to publish about itself, under Decree-Law 7/2004 and the Estatuto da Ordem dos Advogados.
Of these, section 4 is the one we would ask you to read before sending us anything.
1Who runs this website

2What this website is for
It exists to describe the firm, its areas of practice and how to contact us. It is not a client portal, it offers nothing for sale, and it does not allow a matter to be opened or any transaction to be carried out online.
We take care to keep the content accurate, but it is general in nature and states the law as we understood it at the time of writing. The law changes, and these pages are not revised each time it does.
3This is not legal advice
Nothing on this website constitutes legal advice, and none of it should be relied upon as advice concerning your own situation. Legal advice depends on the facts of the particular matter, none of which are known to us until you tell us.
Reading this site does not make you our client, nor does sending us a message or speaking to us by telephone. We act for you only once a conflict check has been carried out, the scope of the work agreed, and the engagement confirmed in writing.
You should not act, or decide against acting, on the basis of anything published here without taking advice on your own circumstances.
4Before you send us anything confidential
Please do not send us confidential or sensitive information in a first approach.
Until we have confirmed that we act for you, we cannot promise to treat what you send as we would treat a client's information. We may already be acting for someone on the other side of your matter, and an unsolicited message could prevent us from taking your case, or oblige us to stop acting for an existing client. Ordinary email is also not a secure channel.
Tell us in outline what the matter concerns and how to reach you. Once we have checked for conflicts and confirmed we can act, we will tell you how to send the rest.
Messages sent through this website reach us as ordinary email. How we handle them is described in the Privacy Policy.
5Professional regulation
Lawyers practising in Portugal are enrolled with, and subject to the disciplinary authority of, the Ordem dos Advogados. Our practice is governed by the Estatuto da Ordem dos Advogados and by the professional rules made under it, which cover professional secrecy, conflicts of interest, advertising and the conduct of client business. They are published at portal.oa.pt.
This site is intended as professional information within the limits those rules place on how lawyers may present themselves. It is not an offer of services, and it makes no claim as to the outcome of any matter.
6Intellectual property
The text, photographs, logo, design and structure of this website belong to Ana Cristina de Carvalho Bastos or are used with the owner's permission. They are protected by the Portuguese Copyright Code and by European Union law.
You may read the site, print pages, and quote briefly from them with attribution. You may not reproduce, republish, adapt or use any part of it commercially without our written permission. The photographs show identifiable people and are licensed to us for use on this site only; they may not be reused.

7Links to other websites
Where we link elsewhere, it is for convenience. We do not control those sites, we are not responsible for their content, and linking to them does not mean we endorse them. Once you follow a link you leave this site, and the terms and privacy practices of the destination apply instead of ours. The WhatsApp link on the contact section takes you to a service operated by Meta.
8Availability and liability
We do not guarantee that this site will be available without interruption or free of error. It may be suspended for maintenance, or withdrawn, without notice.
To the extent Portuguese law permits, we are not liable for loss arising from use of this website, from reliance on its general content, from its unavailability, or from any interference with it in transit. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including liability for wilful misconduct or gross negligence, and nothing here limits our professional responsibility to clients we have agreed to act for.
9Complaints and dispute resolution
If you are dissatisfied with something we have done, we would ask you to raise it with us first, at geral@anabastos-law.com. Most complaints are resolved at that stage.
Should that not settle the matter, the conduct of lawyers in Portugal falls under the disciplinary jurisdiction of the Ordem dos Advogados, and you may refer the matter to it directly. Details of how to do so are published at portal.oa.pt.
Where you engaged us as a consumer, Article 18 of Law 144/2015 of 8 September requires us to inform you which alternative dispute resolution bodies are available. For a client in Lisbon that is the Centro de Arbitragem de Conflitos de Consumo de Lisboa, at centroarbitragemlisboa.pt. We have not submitted to its jurisdiction in advance, and the provision of this information does not constitute an agreement to arbitrate any particular dispute.
10Changes to these terms
These terms may be revised. The version in force is the one published here, bearing the date shown at the top, and it applies to your use of the site from that date.
11Governing law and jurisdiction
These terms are governed by Portuguese law. Disputes arising from the website or from these terms are subject to the courts of the district of Lisbon, save where a rule of law confers on you the right to bring proceedings elsewhere, and in particular, where you are a consumer, the mandatory rules permitting you to sue in the courts of your place of residence.
